Wrapping the sleeve of her sweater over her hand, Dahlia ran it under her nose to try and comfort herself.

“I can hear you’re having trouble breathing,” he said, ignoring the fact that she hadn’t replied. “I want you to concentrate on breathing in and out really slowly. Just the same as we’ve done before. All right? In. Hold. Then out. Try again for me. That’s it. Good girl. I’m so proud of you. You’re fighting back. That’s it. And another one. Well done.”

She felt ridiculously proud even though it wasn’t really much of an accomplishment.

“Keep breathing nice and slow for me. Good. Very good.”

In. Hold. Out.

“L’venok, is it all right if I come closer?”

She bit at her sleeve, worrying away at it.

“Not ready to talk? That’s all right. How about if you can’t answer me verbally, you tap on the floor instead? One tap is no. Two taps are yes.”

All right. She could do that. She tapped her hand down. He waited, not moving. She tapped again.

She could trust him. And she wanted him near.

He moved closer so he was just a foot away. Then he lay on his side, his gaze meeting hers. “Do you think I could remove the mat?”

One tap. No.

“All right, how about if I just move it away from your face? So I can see you better?”

Two taps. Yes.

She could move it back up if necessary.

She rubbed her sleeve under her nose continuously. She knew from previous episodes that she could rub her skin raw. But she couldn’t stop.

“Well, hello there, baby girl,” he said softly.

He didn’t mean that the way it sounded. Right?

Of course not. She was reading too much into it. She let out a sigh.

“Do you think you could come out from under there?”

Another clap of thunder. She jumped.

His gaze turned thoughtful. “Are you scared of the thunder?”

Two taps. Yes.

“All right. And Gray scared you? Made you panic?”

Two taps.

“I’m guessing maybe there’s something more going on as well.” He studied her face carefully, zeroing in on her hand which kept moving under her nose.

Now he was going to think she was a complete weirdo.

“You know you’re safe. Gray wouldn’t have hurt you.”

Two taps. Yes.

Knowing it and realizing it when her guard was down and she was caught by surprise was something else.

“Do you think you’re ready to come out?”

One tap. No.

“All right, what would make you feel safer? Actually, I have an idea.”

He started to sit up. She let out a cry and he held a hand up.

“You’re all right. You’re safe.” He stood.

That wasn’t the issue.

She tapped her hand down.

“No?” he asked. “No, what?”

Another tap. No!

She pointed at him, then down at the floor, giving him a stern look. To her shock, he actually smiled.

“Well, considering you didn’t say a word you just told me, didn’t you? I’ll stay here. I wasn’t going to leave for long. I was just going to ask Gray to get Ricky Rhino. Would you like him?”

Two taps. Then another one.

Fuck. She was a mess.

She knew she was being silly.
